How to Publish Roblox Animation Saves for Your Game or Group
Find editable animation saves, publish an animation under the right creator, connect its asset ID, and troubleshoot permissions in a Roblox experience.
What is an animation save?
An editable animation save preserves animation data for a rig in Studio. It is different from the published animation asset that a game normally references by ID. Studio stores local saves in ServerStorage; they do not replicate to clients. Publishing the animation creates an asset you can connect to your experience.
Start in a working copy of your place and keep the original file untouched. You need the matching rig, editable save, and permission to publish under the creator that will own the animation.
Find the matching rig and animation
- Open your place, or import the RBXM model into a working place. Open Explorer and Properties.
- Locate the intended rig and its animation data. Depending on how it was saved, you may find the animation under the rig's
AnimSavesor referenced through it, with data inServerStorage → RBX_ANIMSAVES. Inspect the reference rather than assuming folders with similar rig names are interchangeable. - Place or select the matching rig in Workspace and open the Animation Editor from the Avatar tab. Select the rig and use the editor's load menu to open its saved animation. Preview it before publishing.
If the save is missing from the editor, check that the rig and saved animation belong together and that the rig's saved reference still points to the intended data. Do not delete existing saves while troubleshooting; keep a backup and ask the file provider if you cannot identify the matching animation.
Publish under the right creator
- With the intended animation open in the editor, play it and check the rig's movement, loop and priority for your use.
- Click the editor's ⋯ menu and choose Publish to Roblox.
- Enter a title. In the Creator field, choose the account or group that should own the asset. Roblox's documentation says to select the group when the animation will be used in a group-owned game.
- Submit the upload and copy the resulting animation asset ID. Repeat for each animation you need; keep a simple mapping of rig, animation name and new ID.
For a group, your role must allow the relevant asset creation. If the group is unavailable or uploading fails, check group permissions and Roblox's current requirements. Keep the local save if you may want to edit the animation later.
Connect the new ID and test
Update the appropriate AnimationId or configuration in your own project to use the newly published asset, typically in the form rbxassetid://YOUR_ID. Replace YOUR_ID with the actual numeric ID. Where that setting lives depends on the project; search its Explorer objects and scripts before changing a value.
Publishing does not automatically add playback logic. Use the project's existing animation system or create the necessary playback behavior, then test the animation in a separate published test experience. Check the rig, movement, looping and Output from a second account as well as your own. For non-player rigs, Roblox documents that animations need to be loaded and started on the server to replicate to other clients.
If an animation does not play
Check the exact ID and creator. Confirm the game uses the new animation ID, not an old ID from a template, and that the intended account or group was selected when publishing. Review any upload or moderation message in the Creator Dashboard.
Read the Output error. For a restricted asset, the creator and the experience may each need access. A permitted creator can manage access on the asset's Permissions page; experience access uses the game's universe ID. Roblox says game grants are permanent, so grant only the intended experience.
Check the rig and playback. A valid upload can still look wrong if the animation targets a different rig or another animation overrides it. Compare the editor preview with the running game, inspect priority, and verify the server/client playback path. Publishing an animation does not automatically publish its sounds or other asset dependencies.
Which RoTemplates packs include animation saves?
Animal Pack 3 includes editable animation saves for its 81 named animals. Fish Pack 1 includes saves for 34 named models; AngelFish has no separate animation save. Both require you to publish and configure animations for your experience.
Animal Pack 4 includes rigs and stored pose data, but no separate animation saves. Review each listing's contents before choosing a pack.
